Frequently asked questions

Where are lessons held?

All private and small group classes are held at our home studio in Hallett Cove, Adelaide. Group workshops and masterclasses will be held at external locations, to be confirmed closer to the date.

How much are lessons?

Lesson prices vary dependant upon type and desired outcome. Please send an enquiry through our contact page for more specific information.

What do I need to bring to lessons?

• Water bottle (using your voice can be quite dehydrating, especially if you are nervous!)

• Plastic sleeve folder containing your repertoire (sheet music/lyrics) and any other music books you are currently working through

• A notebook and pen. Some students prefer a diary to note their weekly homework

• A recording device (There is voice memo’s app on all smart phones)

• A positive attitude!

What is your teaching philosophy?

KEJ teachers deliver a holistic approach to music coaching, with a focus on anatomy, musicality, storytelling and stagecraft. We regularly test a student’s knowledge so that they can take ownership of their instrument and creativity, making sure they understand exactly what they are doing so that they can continue to deliver engaging performances and a healthy vocal production. We absolutely love teaching and sharing the joy of music and performing!

Do you have any formal qualifications? Do you perform professionally?

Yes! Both Katie and Chris have Post-Graduate qualifications in their fields and both work regularly as professional performers. Chris also works as a recording engineer. Please see the Our Team tab for more information on our qualifications and experience.

How do we pay?

Lessons can be purchased in 5 or 10 lesson packs and will be invoiced according to preference. All invoices are to be paid by the next lesson following date of issue. Please be sure to notify us as soon as possible if a student has pre-existing commitments on any of the scheduled lesson days and we can discuss options for a make up lesson. Payment can be made by direct deposit, cheque or cash in full.

Do your lesson blocks follow the school terms?

Yes and no. Lessons at KEJ Studios are offered throughout the school terms, however students can continue throughout the holidays if desired. For adults, lessons are offered throughout the year, however we can adjust the schedule to suit your family commitments as needed.

Do you offer casual classes without commitment?

Yes, casual lessons are offered however there is no guarantee that your preferred lesson time will always be available. Casual lessons are also charged at a slightly higher rate than block bookings and must be paid before lesson commencement.

What is your cancelation policy?

24 hours notice by email or phone is required for students to receive a make-up lesson, otherwise the lesson will be forfeited. Extreme circumstances are obviously considered on a case-by-case basis.

Do you offer group lessons?

At this stage, we are offering group vocal and performing arts lessons for up to 3 students per session at our home studio. These lessons are offered at a reduced rate per student and are great for groups of friends or siblings who wish to learn in a collaborative environment.  We plan to move to a custom built facility in the near future where we can offer larger group sizes. Please send an enquiry to find out more information and fees.

I've never sung publicly before. Can you offer me some reassurance that I'll feel safe?

Absolutely! We have been coaching for over 15 years and have seen students at the beginning of their journeys through to professional status! Trust us, there's no sound you can make that will scare us, no performance style that will freak us out! Lessons are conducted in a separate, sound-proof space away from the ears of others, so only your coach will hear you! We want to help you love your voice and will encourage you to develop your confidence . Our main goal is to make you feel comfortable during your sessions by offering a very safe space for you to explore you sound!

Do you offer performance opportunities?

Yes! Student concerts will be offered during the year to allow students a chance to show their stuff! We also have some exciting workshops in development which culminate in a public performance, in addition to plans for weekly group lessons with a performance focus. Additionally, we encourage students to attend and participate in open mic nights and jam sessions offered throughout Adelaide, and as regular working musicians, there may even be a chance for you to hop up on stage with us at a gig!

Do you offer examination and eisteddfod preparation?

Yes! Students are encouraged to take examinations and compete in eisteddfods however this is not mandatory. Both AMEB and Trinity College London examinations are offered. If you wish to learn more about this, please let us know.

Do you offer a performance troup or choir?

Oh we will be and we can't wait to tell you all about it! Check back for more info coming soon!

Do you have all the necessary working with children checks and first aid training?

Yes. All our coaches have a DSCI, WWCC (NSW), Catholic Schools Clearance, Anaphylaxis Training and First Aid Training.

What equipment do I need for at-home practice?

For vocalists, you need very little, usually just access to an mp3 player, spotify/youtube and safe space to practice! A keyboard, microphone, PA and music stand are all great investments that will help elevate your practice sessions. For piano/'joy of music' students, a keyboard or piano is necessary, however the cost and quality of the instrument doesn't need to be ridiculous! We are more than happy to advise you on the best fit for your needs.

Will there be any extra costs aside from the lesson fee?

KEJ has an extensive range of repertoire for students to choose from. You may be asked to print lyrics and purchase sheet music, books, backing tracks and other equipment from time to time if there are specific songs you wish to learn. If you are taking part in examinations, eisteddfods or competitions, you may be legally required to purchase original copies of sheet music and

backing tracks to adhere to copyright protocol. There are also fees for participating in competitions, exams and eisteddfods. For any workshops, a membership fee will be included in the initial invoice, to cover any necessary costs eg t-shirts, public-liability etc.  Information regarding this point will be given when required.

Do you provide sheet music and backing tracks?

Yes, however additional material may be required for purchase by students if specific repertoire is desired.

Do you have a Covid19 Management Plan

Yes. The studio has a capacity of 3 people per sessions ie student, parent and teacher.  All who enter are required to use the provided hand sanitiser at the entrance and social distancing is encouraged, The studio is cleaned regularly, and high-touch areas are disinfected between students.
